HOPES are rising that the virtual disappearance of horse dung from the streets of Killarney could help the tourist haven win the top award in the national Tidy Towns competition.

The Kerry town has been coming very close and was just two marks behind the overall winner, Emly in Co Tipperary, last year.

Since then, however, there has been an improvement in Killarney’s appearance, key factors being the decision of local jarveys, in May, to fit dung catchers to their carts and an enhanced anti-litter campaign.
