Appeal for information after two separate weekend attacks

Officers in Midleton are appealing for witnesses to an unprovoked attack on a Polish man in the town centre last Saturday.

The 34-year-old was on his way home from work at about 6.40am when he was attacked and robbed by two men.

The attack took place at Cork Road, Midleton, as the Polish man was walking past the roundabout near the Midleton Park Hotel.

Two men came up behind him, grabbed him and then knocked him to the ground where he was kicked and punched.

“They took his wallet, mobile phone and the necklace he was wearing. Both men made their escape in the direction,” a garda spokesman said.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Midleton Garda Station at 021-4621550.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Cork city are investigating an attack on a man who was also assaulted on his way home last Saturday morning.

The man was walking along Washington Street at about 2.20am when he was attacked by another man and knocked to the ground, hitting his head off the pavement.

The attack was witnessed by a man working nearby who contacted the emergency services.

By the time gardaí arrived the attacker had fled.

The victim was taken by HSE ambulance to hospital where he was treated for injuries but later discharged.

Gardaí said the victim lost his watch during the attack and it may have been picked up by a passer-by.

Detectives are studying CCTV footage taken in the area in an effort to identify the attacker.

Anybody with information about that assault is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station at 021-4522000.
