Teen remains critical after petrol station assault

The teenager, from Limerick city, suffered serious head injuries when he was assaulted in the forecourt of the Applegreen filling station in Corbally on the outskirts of the city.

The attack took place at 9.55pm last Friday night.

A 17-year-old boy charged in connection with the incident is due to appear before the children’s court in Limerick later today.

The teenager was arrested after the assault and appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Sunday where he was charged with assaulting the 16-year-old causing him serious harm.

A spokesman for the Mid Western Regional Hospital described the victim’s condition as “critical”.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Cork have seized several items, including swords, as part of their investigation into a weekend assault in which a man was seriously injured.

The victim remained in Cork University Hospital (CUH) last night in a critical but stable condition.

Gardaí are waiting for his medical condition to improve before interviewing him.

He received serious head injuries in an altercation outside a house on Roman Street, off Shandon Street in the city centre, at 3am on Sunday.

A woman who was also injured in the incident was taken to the Mercy University Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

The alarm was raised by a passing motorist and Gardaí rushed to the scene and cordoned it off for a forensic examination.

They are trying to establish whether the on-street assault is linked to an earlier row.

And, as part of their investigation, they seized two swords, a brush handle and iron bars yesterday but stressed that the man’s injuries were not caused by any implement.

A Garda spokesman appealed for anyone who was in the Roman Street area between 6pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday and who saw or heard anything unusual to contact Watercourse Road Garda Station on 021-4558260.
