AN off-duty garda was the victim of a serious assault at the hands of young men who were euphoric from drink having won a Gaelic football match.

Judge Con Murphy said at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that Christopher O’Donovan, 21, of Ballyhandle, Innishannon, County Cork , and Michael Power, 20, of Bothar Na Sop, Innishannon, had a false sense of euphoria as a result of alcohol and victory over a neighbouring club.

Valley Rovers had beaten Newcestown that afternoon – Sunday, July 12, 2009 – and members of the panel and supporters went in to Cork city to celebrate.
