Councillors back €40m GAA plan

CITY councillors voted last night to support contentious GAA plans for an ambitious €40 million revamp of Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork.

They ignored the advice of city manager Joe Gavin and the advice of senior planners in relation to certain aspects of the project and agreed to “facilitate in principle” plans to expand the stadium and develop a centre of excellence nearby.

The vote followed weeks of lobbying by GAA officials, described by one councillor as the most intense he has ever witnessed.
