Online medical card service launched

AN online service launched by the Health Service Executive promises a 15-day turnaround for medical card applications.

Using www.medicalcard.ie, people can check online if they qualify for a medical card or a GP visit card by following some simple steps

The HSE says those who qualify based on their income, can prepare their application online, print the check list and submit it directly with the supporting documents.

Fully completed applications will be fast tracked and cards issued within 15 days, compared to an average waiting time of six to 12 weeks for those making a written application to find out if they were eligible.

There are currently 1.5 million medical card holders, representing 35% of the total population, an increase of 21% since January 2008 and a 35% increase since January 2005.

During the first five months of this year, 68,947 new medical cards were issued by the authority.

The authority’s chief executive, Prof Brendan Drumm, said the online service was another important building block for easier access to health services.

The head of the HSE’s primary care reimbursement service, Paddy Burke, said more than 90% of applicants who automatically qualify for a medical card based on their income would be able to use the website to apply for their cards.

Users will be able to call the lo-call phone number 1890-252919 if they need assistance using the site.

For those unable to apply online, medical card application forms and assistance will continue to be available in local health offices..

“While this is a new service, we are not taking any service away,” Mr Burke insisted.

The health authority is hoping that friends, family members, neighbours and support groups will help those who might find it difficult to make an online application but would benefit from the convenience of the facility.

The website is part of the HSE’s ongoing plan to provide a more responsive and cost-effective medical card service.

The authority is in the process of centralising the back office processing of medical card applications and reviews, a move that will save €10 million.

Mr Burke said delays in processing medical card applications had been resolved, with staff in the central office in Dublin working this week on applications received the previous week and answering phones within seconds.
