GARDAÍ were yesterday continuing to question a man in his 40s over the stabbing of a teenager in Cork city on Sunday night.

The incident happened in Gould Street close to Barrack Street at approximately 11.30pm.

According to gardaí, there was an altercation between the man and a group of young people.

The confrontation came after the group had come out of a house-party.

During the incident, the young man, believed to be 17 years old, was assaulted.

Gardaí were called and the victim was taken to hospital to be treated for multiple stab wounds.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The 43-year-old man was arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda Station where he was yesterday being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene, which is close to the Lough Tavern was closed off for a number of hours while a technical examination was carried out. It re-opened yesterday morning.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the areas of Lough Road or Gould Street between 11pm and midnight on Sunday to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 4522000.
