AN 82-YEAR-OLD woman with dementia was impaled on an iron railing after she fell from a second floor window at a care home for the elderly.

Cork City Coroner’s Court was told yesterday that Maura Looney, from Turner’s Cross in Cork city, fell from the window of her room in the CareChoice facility in Montenotte some time after 7am on New Year’s Day last.

She suffered devastating fatal injuries when she landed on spikes atop a five-foot high iron railing located directly outside the building. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
