NERVOUS Fianna Fáil backbenchers fear the Government scored a major own goal over the way cutbacks for lone parents were announced.

Anger is being directed at Social Protection Minister Éamon O Cuív for not “getting on top” of the situation and selling the proposals in a more positive light.

Despite being well flagged by previous Social Welfare supremo Mary Hanafin, the issue was allowed to gain a momentum of its own since full details were released late on Friday evening by Mr O Cuiv.
