Four questioned over fatal car crash released

FOUR people who were questioned on Thursday in relation to an incident linked to a fatal car crash the previous week have been released without charge. The three men and one woman were released from Tralee and Gurranabraher Garda Stations, with a file being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Two of them, who range from their early 30s to mid-50s, were picked up by officers at 7am on Thursday morning under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which legislates against abduction and false imprisonment.

By 2pm that day, one of the men who was being questioned at Tralee was released, with a six-hour extension on the second man being obtained by gardaí at Gurranabraher.

A woman in Kerry and a man in Cork were questioned over the incident.

However, all have since been released without charge. The questioning is understood to be connected to an incident in the lead up to a fatal car crash on May 13 which took the lives of two teenage boys. CJ Dolan, 16, and Derry O Callaghan, 19. Both died in the incident on Harbour View Road in Knocknaheeny.

They were back-seat passengers in a red Ford Mondeo which was involved in a collision.

On Tuesday, 40-year-old Philip Murphy of 58, Killala Gardens appeared at Cork District Court on charges of the false imprisonment of Darren Lenehan that night.

His defence solicitor, Joseph Cuddigan, applied for his client to be transferred from 24-hour lock-up at Cork Prison to Limerick Prison for his own safety.

This application was rejected, with Mr Murphy now remanded in custody until May 27. While local community representatives in Knocknaheeny have raised concerns over the possibility of a violent flare-up this weekend, gardaí said they are confident people do not want to see more injuries.
