ENDA KENNY has pledged to get voters to back the biggest constitutional shake-up for 70 years – even though he couldn’t get his own party to endorse key reforms.

The Fine Gael leader was forced to drop ambitious moves to impose a quota system for female candidates on all parties due to internal opposition to the plan, and has also backed away from introducing a PR list system for a swathe of Dáil seats.

Despite the watering down of Fine Gael’s reform agenda, Mr Kenny said it was the most radical overhaul of Irish democracy envisaged since the 1930’s.
