Rodent droppings in food among 10,000 complaints

FOOD contaminated with insects, hair, pieces of skin, glass and rodent droppings were the most common type of complaints received last year by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

The authority fielded almost 10,000 queries on food safety. Almost 30% were from people reporting low hygiene standards, unfit food, suspected food poisoning and inaccurate labelling.

Complaints on poor hygiene often concerned staff not washing their hands, touching their face and then handling food and handling raw and cooked food with the same kitchen utensils.
