A NEW national system allowing hospitals to share X-rays and other medical scans will play a crucial role in reducing misdiagnoses, Health Service Executive chief executive Brendan Drumm said yesterday.

Medical imaging system planned

The National Integrated Medical Imaging System (NIMIS) is to be installed in the country’s 35 public hospitals over the next three years, allowing health professionals rapid access to diagnostic images.

Mr Drumm said the roll-out of the €40 million system, due to commence next month, would ensure the highest patient safety standards.
