The images are designed to warn third level students enjoying RAG Week events of how their night could end if they abuse alcohol.
Five Irish colleges — University College Dublin, Cork Institute of Technology, National University of Ireland Galway, Dublin City University and the University of Limerick — which are holding RAG Week charity events this week will be targeted in the drinkaware.ie campaign, based on an initiative in Britain last year.
The campaign features two vinyl mats, one showing a drunk male student and the other showing a drunk female student, both passed out and lying prone on the ground.
The vinyls also feature the message “rethinking our drinking” and the drinkaware.ie logo.
The “flash campaign” will see the mats installed on the college toilet floors for just 24 hours. The colleges’ busiest RAG Week days will be targeted.
The mats will be installed in CIT tomorrow its Rag Week carnival day.
“The vinyls have never been used in Ireland before. We feel this is a fantastic new way of communicating with students while they are actually out drinking,” drinkaware.ie’s chief executive Fionnuala Sheehan said.
The group has also distributed its “No Nonsense” guide and posters to colleges for the week.
It features a booze myths quiz pack and T-shirts which are designed to shatter the myths about mixing your drinks, lining your stomach, sweating off a hangover and how to sober up quickly.
“Students in Ireland are ready for a new approach to addressing the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and misuse,” Ms Sheehan said.
“What they want are the facts on how to ensure they don’t miss the best part of the night, avoid hangovers and fall victim to the beer goggles effect. The Booze Myths campaign is a fun way to deliver these facts.”
