Seventeen councils stretching from Cork to Donegal had ordered the salt brought in on the MV Jumbo from Teesport in the north east of England.

The unloading started at around 2pm and will be completed this morning.

A spokesman for the port said: “This brings to 12,000 tonnes the amount of salt which has been shipped in… and is the equivalent of 20% of the total average amount of salt used on Irish roads.”
