Industry pins hope on scrappage scheme

THE motor industry yesterday said it was pinning its hopes on the Government’s scrappage scheme after the beleaguered sector saw 70 businesses close last year.

An estimated 600,000 cars are eligible for the Government’s new scrappage scheme, with car dealerships reporting early interest.

The scrappage scheme is the first to be introduced since the mid-’90s, when 6,500 vehicles were scrapped in the scheme over a two-year period.
