PLUMMETING sub-zero temperatures brought a freezing start to the new year and severely disrupted road, rail and air transport.

Snowfall heralded the start of 2010 in many parts of the country, but by yesterday morning this had turned to ice and made travel treacherous on the country’s roads.

With the cold snap likely to continue for most of the coming week, people have been advised to take extra care when travelling. Gardaí also advised motorists to undertake only essential journeys.
