REVELLERS ringing in the new year tonight will have to wrap up warmly as temperatures could go as low as minus five degrees.

Meteorologists have said that icy conditions will be widespread by this evening and highest temperatures will be 1-4 degrees. The weather will be coldest inland, according to Met Éireann.

Gardaí have urged motorists to only venture outdoors if really necessary. Where cars are being used, AA Roadwatch are advising motorists once again to slow down and to keep a safe distance from other drivers.
