Hunger striker to protest through Christmas

THE man who has been on hunger strike for a week over redundancy terms has vowed to continue his protest through Christmas.

This is despite confirmation that the €84,000 package he refused earlier this year is still on the table.

Father of nine, John Lane, 54, from Ballylanders in Co Limerick, who has been on hunger strike in Mitchelstown square, in north Cork since last Wednesday, dismissed 4HOME’s offer as “intimidation” and vowed to continue his protest.

“I am staying where I am until I get what I’m entitled to,” he said.

He is looking for a figure close to €150,000 to which he claims he is entitled given his long service.

Mr Lane worked with Dairygold for 38½ years and was a shop assistant in a Dairygold Co-Op store in Mitchelstown.

In 2006, it became a 4HOME premises when ownership was transferred to Reox Holdings, – a spin-off business arm of Dairygold. Mr Lane was one of 40 people who lost their jobs in August when Reox closed three stores.

He is the only one of the 40 who refused to accept redundancy payment. Mr Lane insists Dairygold are responsible for his redundancy. But 4HOME has issued a detailed statement in which it says he has no entitlement from Dairygold.

The company said 4HOME assumed all the legal responsibility with regard to Mr Lane’s prior employment in Dairygold and 4HOME has discharged all its responsibilities.

“The company confirms that a redundancy package in excess of €84,000 net after tax, including statutory and ex-gratia payments, has been and continues to be available for collection by Mr Lane whenever he might choose to collect it,” the company said.

“In addition Mr Lane is entitled to a pension and has options in respect of this including a lump-sum amount at his discretion.” They said Mr Lane’s claims of additional redundancy have no foundation.
