Fresh arrest linked to shooting of Limerick man

Gardaí have made five drugs finds worth up to €300,000 in searches as part of the murder investigation.

Cocaine worth about €60,000 was found yesterday in the Ballysimon area.

The arrest yesterday brings to nine the number in custody. Limerick District Court has granted orders to extend the detention periods of eight others arrested. Those in custody include a woman aged 38, her son, aged 19, and her two teenage daughters. Three men and a youth under the age of 18 are also being held.

Up to 40 gardaí from the search teams in Limerick, Cork and Kerry carried out huge searches in the Ballysimon road area about a mile from where Mr Fitzgerald, aged 25, was shot.

Mr Fitzgerald was shot as he walked from a mobile home owned by his uncle at Ballysimon.

Following the shooting gardaí raided a house some miles away where the woman and her three children were arrested.

A car which may have been used by the gunman was found in a field not far from the house and cocaine worth €200,000 was found in a further search of the area.

All those arrested are connected to a Limerick feud family. However, gardaí are satisfied the murder was not feud-related.

Mr Fitzgerald may have been shot in a case of mistaken identity.
