Elderly woman stabbed in hand

A MAN was arrested yesterday after a vicious mugging last week when an elderly woman was stabbed during a visit to a Limerick cemetery.

Elderly woman stabbed in hand

The 85-year-old, a retired doctor, sustained a knife wound to her hand as she tried to hold onto her purse.

A man was arrested and questioned at Roxboro Road station. He was later released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The attack occurred as the doctor was leaving Mount St Oliver Cemetery last Thursday where she had visited a family grave.

She was accompanied by her niece and had returned to their car. Her niece was still in the cemetery when a man and a woman approached her and grabbed her purse through the open passenger side window. As she tried to hold on to her purse, the male attacker produced a knife and slashed her in the hand, before running off with the purse.

The doctor, who lives in the South Circular Road area, was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where she received four stitches for the hand wound.

A Garda spokesman said she had been traumatised by the attack.
