Ulster Bank distances itself from ITT strip show event

ULSTER Bank chiefs were left red-faced yesterday after it emerged the bank had unwittingly promoted an event in which students were offered free entry to a strip show to be held in a bar in Tallaght.

The bank was forced to make a statement after a number of callers to RTÉ’s Liveline programme claimed that, as part of its support for Fresher’s week in the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT), it was offering new students who opened a student account with them a €100 free deposit into their account and a free ticket to a exotic dancing event in the Metro Bar near the college campus on September 24. One caller to the show said her son was told by a representative of the student council how to gain tickets to the event.

“They were told, if they went to the Metro Bar which is outside the campus in Tallaght, Ulster Bank representatives were there waiting and they could open up an Ulster Bank student account and they would get €100 credited into their account and they would also get a free ticket for a stripper,” she said.

However, in a statement, Ulster Bank confirmed it had promoted an event at the Metro Bar, but subsequently withdrew its support once it realised the nature of the event.

“In line with Ulster Bank’s ongoing support for student events across the country, we can confirm that as part of our student campaign in IT Tallaght we promoted a fresher’s week event to be held at the Metro Bar. Ulster Bank has no involvement in the organisation of this event and once the nature of the event was realised, the bank immediately withdrew any association with the event,” the statement read.

Both the Union of Students in Ireland and the Student’s Union at the ITT declined to comment on the controversy.

A spokesperson for the college said ITT “had no association with Ulster Bank” and would not be commenting further on the matter.

Susan McKay of the National Women’s Council of Ireland Alliance criticised the promotion of such an event on a college campus.
