GOVERNMENT departments have been told to stop booking first-class flights and five-star hotels for ministers and senior civil servants.

The Department of Finance has issued new foreign travel policy guidelines in an effort to crack down on luxury trips which rack up excessive costs at taxpayers’ expense. Departments have been told:

* To use economy-class travel for short-haul flights.
