Fifth of inmates under protection

ONE FIFTH of the prison population was under protection last year because of threats from feuds outside jails like drug debts and gang rivalries.

There were 832 prisoners put on protection at one stage in 2008, some who were locked up for 23 hours a day.

The details on protection, published for the first time, also show there were 759 acts of violence committed in jails in the year.
