101,000 elderly women live alone

MORE than 100,000 women aged 65 and over live alone, twice as many as men of the same age, according to CSO figures.

The figures for last year show there were 151,000 people aged 65 and over living alone. This was an increase of the figure of 139,000 recorded in 1999.

However, about 101,000 of those elderly living alone are women compared to just 50,000 men.
