A HEAVE against embattled Taoiseach Brian Cowen was threatened from within Fianna Fáil ranks last night as it emerged opposition parties are urgently readying themselves for a snap general election on November 5.

Sacked trade minister John McGuinness broke ranks warning the Taoiseach there are now “serious questions” regarding his leadership after the Government’s Dáil majority was wiped out due to TDs resigning the FF whip in policy protests.

Mr McGuinness said that unless the Taoiseach showed vigour and a new direction when the Dáil returns next month: “There are mechanisms there for others to challenge his leadership.”
