AN estimated 1,000 horses will starve to death in Ireland this winter due to the credit crunch, it was claimed yesterday.

The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), which made the claim at the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show, called on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Horse Racing Ireland and the other equestrian bodies to place an embargo on horse breeding.

The society wants this ban maintained until the over-breeding problems facing the equine industry have been addressed.
