THE number of unsolved murders in the past two decades stood at 176 up to the end of June.

Since 1989, 782 murder cases have been recorded. Gardaí have made detections in 606 of those, leaving 176 unsolved.

“Detection” means that gardaí are satisfied they have identified the culprit, but does not necessarily mean a prosecution or conviction will follow.
