PAYING for sex and using the service of a prostitute who has been trafficked into the country should be made illegal here, possibly carrying a rape charge, under proposals put forward by Fine Gael.

Laws coming into effect in the North and across Britain later this year will make it illegal to use a trafficked prostitute and the opposition said this will lead to a huge increase in demand south of the border.

While it is against the law to sell sex here, a person who uses the services of a prostitute can argue they did so innocently and did not know they were trafficked for exploitation.
