THE conviction of two brothers who beat and stabbed a father of six to death in front of his children is unsafe because of comments in a widely publicised speech during their trial by Mr Justice Paul Carney, the Court of Criminal Appeal has heard.

In June 2008, Warren Dumbrell, 35, and Jeffrey Dumbrell, 29, from Emmet Place, Inchicore, Dublin, were convicted of the murder of Christopher Cawley.

Mr Cawley, 36, died in front of the block of flats where he lived at Tyrone Place, Inchicore, Dublin, on October 29, 2006.
