PRESSURE mounted on the President last night not to sign a sweeping new crime crackdown into law after senators attacked the way it was being rushed through the Seanad.

President McAleese must decide whether to refer the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill to the Supreme Court or allow it to stand as it is.

Labour is urging the President to use her powers – in consultation with the State Council – to test the bill’s constitutionality by referring it immediately to the courts as the party fears the legislation will be ineffective and open to appeal and condemnation.
