TOUGH new legislation to combat organised crime by mimicking anti-terrorism measures has been approved at a special cabinet meeting.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said the speedy agreement at cabinet level will allow the law to be brought through the Dáil before next month’s summer recess.

The bill gives power to expert gardaí to categorise a criminal gang and puts in place jail terms for people directing such groups.
