FIANNA Fáil last night admitted it needed radical overhaul to make the party “fit for purpose” following its election drubbing.

While Taoiseach Brian Cowen dismissed opposition calls for a general election, he admitted to a meeting of his TDs and senators that significant changes were necessary.

The meeting, which took place after Fine Gael had tabled a motion of no confidence in the Government, lasted for four and a half hours and was described as “hot” and “frank”.
