LOCAL authorities in Co Dublin have laid the blame for their abysmal performance in the Blue Flag Awards at the feet of the gods – the weather gods.

Dun Laoighaire/Rathdown County Council and Fingal County Council both said that the downpours last July and August cost them their gold star flags.

A spokeswoman for Dun Laoighaire/Rathdown said that they didn’t enter Seapoint into the competition this year as they knew that it had suffered “storm pollution” when overflows from foul water pipes infiltrated the water due to heavy rainfall.
