MEPs ‘failed to convey’ antics of Euro-sceptics

EURO-SCEPTICS in Brussels celebrated our rejection of Lisbon by using the Tricolour as a bar-room table cloth, and election candidate Eoin Ryan said anti-treaty MEPs were remiss in not communicating this back home.

Mr Ryan is under pressure to retain his seat in Dublin in a close battle with Sinn Féin’s MEP Mary Lou McDonald. But he denied he was engaged in a dirty tricks campaign with Ms McDonald after he singled out her absentee record in the parliament. “Anybody who saw the carry-on, the glee of Euro-sceptic MEPs in the parliament, the celebrations, the Paddy-whackery, the Irish Tricolour thrown over tables in bars with their drinks on top of it.

“It was wonderful for them, they enjoyed every minute of it, but it was certainly an embarrassment for Irish people,” he said. Mr Ryan also said Irish MEPs didn’t convey this accurately to the Irish people
