The grim discovery was made at Glengarra Wood, which is a few miles south of Cahir, Co Tipperary.

Gardaí were alerted by a woman walking her dog shortly after noon yesterday and immediately sealed off the wood which is close to the Kilcoran Lodge Hotel.

It may take gardaí some time to make a formal identification of the body.

However, the dead man is believed to be in his 40s and was from the Mitchelstown area.

Gardaí in Cahir called in the assistance of the Garda Technical Bureau who travelled from Dublin to examine the scene.

The car was found in one of the car parks at the entrance to the 776 hectare wood, which nestles on the southern foothills of the Galtee Mountains.

Glengarra Wood is a particularly popular spot for walkers and nature-lovers. It teems with wildlife including deer, foxes red squirrels and badgers. It also boasts a number of rare tress and shrubs and is dotted with picnic areas along 5km of riverside and walking trails.

Meanwhile, gardaí are awaiting postmortem results on the body of a young man that was discovered in a house in Cork city yesterday afternoon.

The flat at Gardiner’s Hill remained sealed off last night as part of the investigation being carried out by gardaí from Mayfield.

The dead man, believed to be in his early 20s, was found at around 3pm at 2 Stowan Villas.

Garda experts carried out a technical examination of the scene.

The man’s body was removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a postmortem was to be carried out by assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

A senior garda spokesman said they would be keeping an open mind on the case until they had received Dr Bolster’s report.
