Triggs joins Roy to help promote guide dogs

TRIGGS, football’s biggest canine celebrity, is sure to put his famous master in the shade when he makes his big screen debut this weekend.

The faithful and extremely fit labrador and his master, Roy Keane, will appear in a new television commercial to promote the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind/Specsavers SHADES 2009 campaign.

Triggs has been happily resting his paws since Roy took over as manager of Ipswich Town but a couple of doggie treats persuaded him to sign up for his new film career.

The campaign focuses on raising funds for the training of guide and assistance dogs and centres around a week of fundraising nationwide that kicks off on Monday.

Roy has spent the past seven years raising awareness of the needs of people living with blindness or a vision impairment and raising much-needed funds for the charity.

Asked how he felt about being upstaged by his dog in the commercial, Roy said that Triggs had agreed to make what he described as a guest appearance.

“It’s trying to make people aware of what we’re doing and I enjoyed doing it,” Roy said.

The legendary footballer said he was in awe of the work of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

“It’s remarkable to see the positive impact a guide dog or assistance dog has on an individual or family.

“I am a great admirer of their work and the effort put in by their volunteers and partners in making a difference to others,” he said.

Chief executive of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Padraig Mallon said they were really excited about this year’s campaign, especially the commercial, as it gave them the chance to tell their story to the general public.

“It costs approximately €38,000 to train a guide dog and while the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind trained more guide and assistant dog partnerships in 2008 than ever before in its history, the demand continues to increase,” he said.
