Man’s body recovered after car found in river

GARDA divers have recovered the body of a 33-year-old man whose car had been found earlier in a river in Co Cork.

Garda divers discovered the body of David O’Donoghue in the River Bandon, nearly 3km south-east of Innishannon.

The discovery was made at 3.15pm yesterday, a day after Mr O’Donoghue’s disappearance.

His family last saw him at home in Ballinadee, near Bandon at 1am on Monday.

Mr O’Donoghue, a single man who worked for the US-owned EMC data storage specialists in Ovens, had been watching TV when his family said goodnight to him.

They presumed he’d gone to work later that morning, but were alerted to his disappearance by gardaí after his blue Nissan car was discovered partly submerged in the river at 11.30am on Monday.

The doors of the car were closed, the windows were up and the keys were still in the ignition.

More than 100 volunteers began searching stretches of the tidal river yesterday morning. Members of the missing man’s family also took part, along with Coastguard search teams from Kinsale and the Seven Heads.

A Civil Defence boat searched the river while gardaí also combed the river bank.

Superintendent Eddie MacEoin said his thoughts were with the family of Mr O’Donoghue.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all the volunteers who turned up to help with the search,” he said.

He added that gardaí were still interested in hearing from anybody who may have seen Mr O’Donoghue’s car between Ballinadee and Kilmacsimon between 1am and 11.30am last Monday.

Meanwhile, gardaí and navy divers are continuing to search for a missing Polish man, who is presumed drowned following an accident on a cross-river ferry in Cork Harbour. The 28-year-old man will be missing a month next Sunday.

The car he was travelling in fell off the ferry from Carrigaloe to Glenbrook. The car still hasn’t been located.
