THE rich can legitimately avoid paying tax with the “connivance” of Brian Lenihan, the Labour Party claimed at the weekend in an attack on the Finance Minister who was described as being “in the last chance saloon”.

The party’s spokeswoman on finance, Joan Burton, said Mr Lenihan had failed to show bad bankers the door and accused his Fianna Fáil party of “being afraid of the rich people”.

In a number of speeches throughout the Labour conference in Mullingar, the party insisted there must be an end to “tax shelter schemes” in next week’s budget.
