‘Drive-by eggings’ on the rise in college vicinity
Thugs are firing eggs from passing cars at hapless pedestrians around University College Cork (UCC).
While the attacks were initially isolated, there appears to have been a surge in the bizarre attacks, usually associated with Halloween pranks, in recent weeks.
And while it appears that students were the targets of earlier attacks, the thugs now appear to be singling out anyone who looks like an easy target — day or night.
Attacks have been reported on College Road, outside the Brookfield Complex, and last weekend, several incidents were reported in the Western Road areas.
Several contributors to an online UCC forum have written about their own personal experience of being attacked.
“The amount of cars firing eggs out their windows at people on College Road is getting ridiculous,” one contributor wrote.
“It’s actually reached the point where I’ll avoid calling to my friends in Brookfield because chances are I’ll get egged.
“Last night I was walking from Brookfield and five cars drove past in a convoy with people hanging out the window shouting abuse and firing eggs ... [they] had a good aim and I was destroyed. I can’t begin to tell you the rage that took over.”
Students Union president Cal Diolúin, who has been studying in UCC for four years, admitted that he has been egged a few times. But he said the recent surge in attacks has not officially been brought to his attention yet.
A garda spokesman said he was not aware of the details surrounding the most recent incidents.
