Yet despite this, the Sinn Féin leadership ensured a motion by one of the party branches ruling out coalition with Fianna Fáil was defeated.

Mr Adams claimed Labour had a duty not to prop up the “conservative parties” in coalition and urged the Green Party to similarly consider its position. “The replacement of the current coalition... by another coalition with Fine Gael as the main party would be like replacing Tweedledum with Tweedledee,” he said.
