THE Government was accused last night of driving a wedge between the public and private sectors so as to implement greater cuts on workers’ pay.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore told the Dáil last night that while the real wedge was between those responsible for the economic crash and those feeling its effects, public sector workers had been portrayed as being “impervious” to the recession.

Moving a Labour Party Dáil motion on the pension levy, Mr Gilmore said: “There has been, since the start of the economic downturn, a deliberate attempt to drive a wedge between those who work in the private sector and those who work in the public sector.
