Local elections for June 5

THE local and European elections will take place on June 5 next, Environment Minister John Gormley announced yesterday.

He also told the Dáil he intended to introduce spending limits in time for the local elections. These will limit the amount each candidate can spend on his or her campaign.

“The purpose of introducing spending limits is to create as level a playing field as possible to ensure that candidates of modest means are not put at a disadvantage in contesting an election,” said Mr Gormley.
