THE prospect of a new property tax being introduced has increased after the Government chief whip suggested investment houses were an area which could provide increased revenue.

Deputy Pat Carey said the Government had to broaden its tax base and would look at all options available — including a tax on property.

He said he did not foresee a situation where first or second properties, bought for long-term investment purposes, should be taxed, but where speculation had taken place this could be targeted.
