A STAND is being taken in Co Kerry against plans by Eircom to remove more than 100 public telephone kiosks from towns and villages around the county.

Stiff opposition to  payphone removal

An emergency motion is to be brought before the February meeting of Kerry County Council by Independent councillor Brendan Cronin who has also asked that a letter of objection be sent to Eircom.

Mr Cronin said the removal of kiosks would be yet another blow to rural Ireland, claiming Eircom was failing in its obligation under EU legislation to provide essential services to communities.
