Figures released by port management showed traffic dropped by 500,000 tonnes last year, from a record 10.6 million tonnes recorded in 2007.

Container traffic dropped by nearly 7%, while oil traffic — the bulk of which is processed at the Whitegate refinery — dropped by 4.45% to 5.8 million tonnes.
