CYCLISTS and pedestrians should be safer on the roads after legislation requiring some heavy goods vehicles to be fitted with blind spot mirrors.

New rules to protect cyclists from lorry blind spots

The majority of cyclists killed on Irish roads have died as a result of being hit by a larger vehicle and Dublin is recognised as the most dangerous city in Europe for cyclists.

Under the legislation that comes into force immediately, all HGVs above 3.5 tonnes registered after 2000 will have to be fitted with the mirrors designed to eliminate the blind spot.
