Collins to face assault retrial

FORMER boxing world champion Steve Collins is to face a retrial later this year at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on a charge of assaulting a bouncer at the National Stadium two years ago.

Collins, 44, of St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, denies assaulting 37-year-old Albanian national Adriatik Vodo, when he was refused entry at the stadium on June 3, 2006. A jury failed to agree on a verdict on the same charge after a six-day trial and four hours of deliberation last November.

Prosecuting counsel Sean Gillane asked for a new trial date later this year which Judge Katherine Delahunt set for October, and remanded Collins on continuing bail until then.
