THOUSANDS of newly unemployed people will be hit with an extra tax on their redundancy payments, the Department of Finance confirmed last night.

The income levy of 1%-3% announced in Budget 2009, will apply to voluntary redundancy sums of more than €10,160.

Statutory redundancies of two weeks’ pay per year of service will not be subject to the tax, the department said.
