THE Government has been pressed to look to the EU for assistance from a €500 million fund available to areas suffering the effects of globalisation.

Colm Burke, MEP for the country’s southern constituency, said the loss of 1,900 jobs at Dell was exactly why the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund was in place.

Mr Burke, who sits on the European Parliament’s internal markets committee, said the money is available to help retrain affected workers and support self-employment opportunities.
